27 Jun Selling your business: 5 steps for getting your brick and mortar business ready to sell
If you’re considering retiring and selling your brick and mortar business we hope you’ve spoken to a professional and gotten your business valuation. Once that’s done, it’s time to consider the real possibility that at some point potential buyers will walk in your store. With this in mind, we offer the following tips for staging your store for potential buyers:
Steps for Selling your business: Get your store ready.
First, check your curb appeal. Make sure your store signage is attractive. If lights are burned out on, replace them. If paint is peeling on your sign, repaint it. Make it look fresh and inviting. Check your landscaping and then take a look at your windows and window dressings. First impressions are everything and this is what people will first notice about your store as they approach it.
Next, and we know you do this already, make sure the inside of the store is neat and tidy as well.
Third, declutter your office spaces. Sometimes, and we’re guilty of it too, our desk spaces end up covered in stacks of paper, flies, etc. While whomever purchases the business will have their own organizational methods, it doesn’t hurt to make sure that all areas of your business look uncluttered and clean.
Then, make sure everyone is providing quality customer service. Again, we know you already do this, but it’s important to make sure your employees are happy – regardless of their knowledge of an impending sale. If customers/potential buyers chat up your employees, “Wow this seems like a great place to work…” you want to make sure your crew has only good things to say!
Finally, check your marketing. Make sure your social media accounts are up-to-date and used. No one wants to see abandoned accounts. Check your reviews. It’s ok if you have some bad ones, but make sure you’ve responded to them. That shows that your business is concerned with customer satisfaction.
